The Other Day We Received An Email...

...from a friend which, among other things, contained this:

 Also, whose song is this…
keep me a secret, keep me as your own,
Duh du du du du…
Etc.
I’ve got it stuck in my head!

Wrong lyrics aside, we knew right away that she (for it was a she) was referring to a nice song called 'Keep me a Secret' by this fella.
Remember Ainslie, the “Indie” one on Fame Academy series 1 (though to be fair, it’s not hard to be the indie one when your fellow contestants are this guy and this guy.) He had messy hair, wore scruffy Converse and did the dinosaur arms dance before it became too much a parody of itself. He was also the Fame Academy 'student' with whom you'd have most liked to go for a couple pints.

His debut single 'Keep me a Secret' went to No.5 soon after the show and then dropped out of sight immediately. If you still used Myspace at the latter end of 2006, you'd know he independently released an album that was all a bit angsty instagram, didn't catch on, and hence sold about 9 copies. We think he might work in animation now.

The thing is, we recognised 'Keep me a Secret' because it’s sort of continuously been in the back of our heads since 2002. We never bought it, it's by no means phenomenal, it's probably just about very very good,  but we do find ourselves singing it in the shower once every, say…two months? That’s pretty impressive for a decade old one-not-really-that-much-of-a-hit-wonder that disappeared out of popular culture along with its artist almost as soon as it arrived.

Someone clever (that we thought was Harper Lee but it turns out not) once said that everyone has at least one great novel in them. Maybe the same can be said for penning pop songs, and we hope that rather than wallowing in some awkward asymmetric pose at home, apoplectic with rage that he didn't become David Bowie, Ainslie is rightly chuffed with himself that he found his.

Let’s remember, and say "Thanks Ains".

(If Ainslie in fact does not like this song and did not want to be reminded of it again then, “Sorry Ains“)
